El que los ríos y mares sean los reyes (de las aguas) de cientos de valles, viene de que saben mantenerse a un nivel inferior. Por ello, son los reyes de entre las aguas. Así el sabio: si quiere estar sobre las gentes, ha de mantenerse en sus charlas por debajo de ellos; si quiere estar por delante de las gentes, ha de mantenerse detrás.
